Recipe

Ingredients

  • Yve's Potjie Masala
  • 1 kg meat of your choice (beef, lamb, or chicken)
  • 1-2 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp crushed ginger
  • 1 tsp crushed garlic
  • Assorted vegetables of your choice (e.g., potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, squash)
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Oil for cooking
  • Water (amount based on preferred gravy consistency)
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Clean and prepare the meat of your choice by cutting it into bite-sized pieces. Chop the onions and vegetables. Crush the ginger and garlic.
  2. Sauté Onions: Heat oil in a large pot or potjie pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they become soft and translucent.
  3. Add Spice Blend: Sprinkle 3 tbsp of Yve’s Potjie Masala into the pot with the sautéed onions. Stir well to coat the onions evenly with the spices.
  4. Incorporate Ginger and Garlic: Add the crushed ginger and garlic to the pot, and cook for about a minute until fragrant, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
  5. Cook Meat: Add the meat to the pot and cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it starts to brown slightly.
  6. Add Tomatoes: Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and stir to combine. Let the mixture cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes start to break down and form a thick sauce.
  7. Add Water: Pour in water based on your preferred gravy style. Stir well to combine all the ingredients and adjust the consistency as needed.
  8. Add Vegetables: Add the chopped vegetables to the pot and stir to coat them with the sauce. Season with salt to taste.
  9. Simmer: Cover the pot and let the mixture simmer over low heat until the meat is tender and the vegetables are cooked through, stirring occasionally. This could take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the type of meat and vegetables used.
  10. Serve: Once the meat and vegetables are done to your liking, taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, preferably in a Potjie Pot or slow cooker for authentic flavor.
